Overview
Horizon is a 5 star hotel attached to SkyCity with a sky bridge and adjacent to the New Zealand Convention Centre also managed by SkyCity. This hotel is clearly aimed at the the convention market but rooms are also suitable for couples.
Location
The location is a 10/10 if your at a Convention, but probably a 9 /10 for tourists. There are sea views from the harbour facing side. Located on Hobson Street across from the road from SkyCity Casino, its connected with a sky bridge offering all weather access between the two buildings. The SkyCity complex includes Sky City Theatre, a Convention Centre, the Sky Tower, the Casino, and Federal Street’s magnificent dining precinct. It’s a must visit location for anyone visiting Auckland and at Horizon you get to stay there. Once the New Zealand Convention Centre opens this will be the best hotel for anyone attending a convention there.
Restaurants & Bars
The SkyCity complex including the Federal Street dining precinct is one of Auckland’s best dining locations, containing some of Auckland’s best restaurants. Cassia, and Massu are joined by Metita (a new restaurant by Michael Merideth), Depot and Federal Street Deli offer some of the best quality casual dining in Auckland, while The Sugar Club, and Orbit offer magnificent views from the top of the Sky Tower. Fortuna is Auckland’s best value buffet, Haumi offers authentic Chinese cuisine, and Andy’s burgers offers simple food in a sports bar like setting.
Accommodation Standard
This is a brand new 5 star hotel attached to the casino and the New Zealand Convention Centre. Rooms are Well designed and have high quality fixtures however it is not aiming to compete with Park Hyatt for luxury. And rooms range from as small as 22m² so not the most generously sized either. But rest assured they will be more than comfortable. The majority of the rooms available are a more generous 29m² and there are suites with a far more generous 58m².
Negatives
- If you’ve got a gambling problem it’s not for you.
- The facilities come at a cost, Horizon is a 5 star hotel in a prime location and is priced accordingly. It is good value given the level of facilities though.
