The Quadrant Hotel and Suites is a perfectly adequate Auckland hotel at a reasonable price in a slightly off central location. It’s in easy walking distance of all of downtown, and it’s close to Auckland University.

A cost effective, clean, safe place to stay; but not an instagramable location by any stretch of the imagination. You walk out the door onto Queen Street, close to Aotea Square. So all of Auckland CBD is a only a short walk away.

They’re undergoing renovation in 2019 scheduled for completion early 2020. As such most of this hotels negative reviews relate to the ongoing construction work. However they do clearly flag that the hotel is under renovation on the home page of their website, so I’m not sure why anyone would book it and then complain about it. Once it’s renovation is complete this will be a top value pick among Auckland Hotels.

VR Queen Street Hotel

3 star VR Hotel Queen street bedroom suite

Situated near the top end of Queen Street the VR Queen Street Hotel is a definitely a cheap hotel. It’s still in the Auckland CBD but it’s near the top of Queen Street. So if you’re holidaying here you can still walk anywhere in Auckland Central but it is a bit of a hike back up the hill to your hotel. Consider it part of your fitness regime and you’ll be just fine.

The hotel itself is at the nice end of 3 star or the bottom end of 4 star. You’ll be staying here because of the price or lack of vacancy in other hotels, but it’s actually a nice place to spend a few days. It’s close to K Roads bars and nightclubs. It’s also close to the townhall and Aotea square. All in all this is a really good cheap hotel in Auckland.

Haka Hotel Suites Auckland City exterior at night

Located on K Road in the top of Auckland’s CBD Haka Hotel is in a different part of town to any of the other central Auckland Hotels. K Road is known for its vibrant nightlife, and there’s plenty of bars and nightclubs close by so expect some noise. You should also expect plenty of drunken idiots roaming the streets on a Friday or Saturday night. You’ll find this is a great location if you’re one of the drunken idiots.

The hotel itself is really nice. Partly because it’s still pretty new (as of 2019) and things are well maintained. Because of this reviews are generally very good, which can be hard to maintain for a cheap hotel.

In summary Haka Hotel is a high quality cheap Hotel in Auckland in a location that won’t suit everyone. But for others the location will be part of the attraction. It’s walking distance to anywhere you’ll want to go if you are young and fit. Eden Park is only 20 minutes walk and Ponsonby is close by. So if you’re fit, and make a day of it, the city is in walking distance. However most will opt to take a bus or a taxi. Parnell is a very upmarket suburb with a great shopping area and plenty of bars and restaurants. Fortunately the bars are not renowned for being to rowdy, so it’s quiet enough at night.

Rose Park is also handy to Newmarket which is only a 20 minute walk away. Mission Bay isn’t to far either. Because of it’s quiet but relatively central location this cheap hotel in Auckland is a great location for older guests, and families with younger children.
