Gulf Harbour Country Club
Located 45 minutes north of Auckland CBD in the Whangaparaoa suburb of Gulf Harbour. This Robert Trent Jones Jr designed course sits on a peninsula jutting out into the Hauraki Gulf offer superb views in every direction. The course itself is magnificent, a true championship course, Gulf Harbour has hosted the New Zealand Open, and the World Cup of Golf. Its 6,400 metres long and the many changes in elevation make it a challenge for even the best golfers, while still being fun for less experienced golfers.
See green fees they vary with season, but NZ locals can play here in winter for just $75 International visitors during summer are only $150. Remember this is a course that has hosted the world cup of golf.

Titirangi Golf Club
Located in West Auckland, Titirangi golf course is New Zealand’s only Alister MacKenzie designed golf course. He also designed the Augusta National home of the Masters. This is a challenging test of golf, it’s hosted numerous New Zealand Opens and has been one of New Zealand’s best courses since 1928. Titirangi golf course welcomes visitors and is a must for any golf enthusiast visiting Auckland. Green fees are $200 for international players and $130 for NZ Residents.

Royal Auckland and Grange
Formed from the merger of two of South Auckland’s oldest and finest golf clubs The Auckland Golf Club and The Grange Golf Club, granted the title Royal Auckland by Queen Elizabeth in 2010. The Course is currently undergoing a massive renovation. Once complete there will be 27 stunning holes that really have had no expense spared. The new Clubhouse opened in 2020 looks magnificent and the new course has been designed by Nicklaus Design. The course has stated goal of being the equal of any metropolitan golf club in Australasia. Translation it’s kind of posh. Visitors are welcome. Well visiting heads of state maybe. This is a private course and to get a game here you pretty much need to marry a member.

Remuera Golf Club
Remuera has long been one of Auckland’s fanciest suburbs, so it stands to reason they also have one of Auckland’s finest golf clubs. That said Remuera is a true New Zealand Golf club where you are welcome for a pint or two in the clubhouse after your round. It’s hosted the New Zealand open so it’s championship quality. It’s probably not on anyone’s bucket list but it is a great golf course and conveniently close to Auckland CBD. Green fees are $150, cheaper if you’re a guest of a member.

Muriwai Golf Club
Muriwai golf course is a true links course built on sand dunes near Muriwai beach. It’s a great option in winter as the sand base means it’s playable in any weather. The drainage over the entire course is excellent. It’s nice in summer too. The green fees here are a little more than some of Auckland’s other courses but that means they can keep it in good nick all year round with regular fairway watering etc. Definitely worth the drive. This is comfortably in NZs top 20 golf courses. Visitors are welcome, green fees for non affiliated players are $120.

Windross Farm Golf Club
Built in 2016 this new addition to Auckland golf is aiming for the top. It’s a true championship golf course and the first course in NZ to host an LPGA tournament. At $165 for non affiliated members it’s reasonably priced for the standard of course. Located in Ardmore about 40 minutes from the CBD.

Formosa Golf Course opened to much fanfare then fell on hard times. It was designed by Bob Charles and hosted the NZ Open in 1998. It was one of the first resort style courses built in NZ but never attracted enough members to be financially successful. Maintenance at the course suffered due to lack of funds. This has turned around with the course having been purchased by the NZ Super fund and management of the resort contracted to Rydges. With money now being spent to bring the course back to its original standard this should rapidly climb the ranking on Auckland courses. The views are sensational. The course is long and the rough is brutal. Green fees are ridiculously low at $65. This is a course that once charged a 30k joining fee and then still had an annual membership fee.

Whitford Park
Whitford Park is a beautiful golf course in Auckland’s rural south east. Whitford is an area of wealthy lifestyle blocks. Long favoured by Auckland’s wealthy horsey set. The people that Formosa tried to attract play here. It’s a great course always kept in good condition and has a great atmosphere in the club house. It’s about 50 minutes from the CBD outside of peak traffic and very reasonably priced with green fees at $100 for non affiliated players.

Pakuranga Golf Club
Pakuranga Golf Club is another excellent suburban golf course in the affluent East Auckland Suburb of Pakuranga. It’s a quality course and relatively cheap to play for a course of this standard. There’s no famous designer or coastal views but don’t let that put you off playing this excellent golf course. Green fees are $85 for non affiliated players.

Howick Golf Club
Howick Golf course is a modest golf club, with an average course in a stunning location. Located in Bucklands Beach on Auckland’s east coast, the course sits on a peninsula called Musick Point. It doesn’t extend to the end of the peninsula that is a public park and the course design doesn’t really make the most of the views, that said it’s built on cliffs overlooking the hauraki Gulf there are plenty of stunning views to enjoy. It’s cheap to play at $75 for non affiliated and only about 35 minutes drive from the CBD.

Waitemata Golf Club
Nestled in between Narrow Neck Beach and Mt Victoria this lovely little golf course is one of Auckland’s oldest clubs. Established in 1905 and the NZ club of the year in 2019. It’s a fairly flat course by Auckland’s standards, and conveniently close to the city. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced round of golf you could do a lot worse than Waitemata golf club. Green fees are $70 for non affiliated.

Chamberlain Park Public Golf Course
Chamberlain Park is a public golf course in Mt Albert. Owned by Auckland City council it makes golf affordable for the masses. You can play golf here for $25. It’s not the most challenging course around but it is a great place to learn to love golf. With a more relaxed dress code, low prices and relatively flat it’s the best place for a fun day out if your not a serious golfer.

Takapuna Golf Course
Auckland’s other public golf course. This is one of the busiest golf course in Auckland. They boast that like it’s a good thing but we all know that nots really what you want at a golf course. They get 7,000 people a month in the summer. This is a cheap place to learn to play golf. Green fees are $32.

RNZAF Golf Course
This golf course is on Whenuapai Air Base. The RNZAF Auckland Golf Club is an 18 hole, course but it’s pretty short at only 5,100 metres and rather flat. Anyone can join but you can only play with a member.

Waitakere Golf Club
Waitakere Golf Course is an absolute gem. It has to Auckland’s steepest golf course, but it’s located in stunning native bush with plenty of native birds. On weekdays you can play casually here for only $25. It’s about 40 minutes drive from Auckland CBD. Not championship quality but still a great place to enjoy golf.

Whangaparaoa Golf Club
Whangaparaoa Golf course live in the shadow of the nearby Gulf Harbour Country Club and Wainui. It’s an older more traditional NZ club. The course is parkland style. Visitors are welcome at $55 per head.

Akarana Golf Club
Opened in 1928 this is another of Auckland older courses. It’s not in the same tier as Gulf Harbour, Royal Auckland, or Titirangi, but similar to Whitford or Pakuranga. It’s a good quality golf course without a famous designer or amazing coastal views. Green fees are $80 for visitors. It’s 15 minutes from the CBD and similar distance from Auckland Airport.

Maungakiekie Golf Club
Formed in 1909 Maungakiekie golf club is over 100 years old. It’s located in Mt Roskill close to Akarana. It’s 15 minutes from both the CBD and the Airport. Popular for twilight golf in the summer months and very welcoming of visitors. This is and excellent city course that’s affordable for visitors. Recent refinements to the course designed by renowned golf architect Dave Harmon (of Kauri Cliffs fame) ensure the course is challenging to golfers of all levels.

Pupuke Golf Club
Pupuke Golf Club is on Auckland’s north shore. An undulating course with 5 par 3’s it’s not a particularly long course but does provide a genuine challenge. Green fees for no affiliated visitors are $55 which is very reasonable.

North Shore Golf Club
North Shore Golf Club is a scenic golf course in Albany that borders the Waitemata Harbour. They have a total of 27 holes and offer three different 18 hole layouts from those 27 holes, offering plenty of variety for regular players. This is the top course on Auckland’s north shore unless you’re going all the way to Gulf Harbour. Non affiliated visitors are $95.

Huapai Golf Club
Huapai Golf Club in Kumeu is a scenic country course surrounded by farmland but only 25 minutes from the CBD. Green fees for non affiliated visitors are $60. The fairways are nice and wide, and the course is fairly flat. It’s fun for players of all levels.

Warkworth Golf Club
Warkworth Golf Club was founded in 1908, the current course was opened in 1935 but not completed until after WW2. It’s a nice but fairly typical New Zealand country course. The fairways are pretty close together in parts. Green fees are $50 for non affiliated players.

Redwood Park Golf Club
Redwood Park is another exceptional value golf course. Non affiliated adults can play a round for $29 on Tuesdays or $40 most other days. Located in Swanson Redwood Park is a little more friendly than some of Auckland’s more snooty courses. This is a well maintained golf course with consistent greens. Approximately 1/2 an hour drive from the CBD.

South Head Golf Club
1 hours drive from Auckland CBD is on the South Head of the Kaipara Harbour is South Head Golf Course. It’s excellent value $30 mid week and and $40 on weekends. It’s sand based so stays dry in winter. A nice rural parkland style course. Friendly and cheap.

Pukekohe Golf Club
Pukekohe Golf Club is a lovely parkland style golf course in Karaka to the south of Auckland. There is plenty of room and the fairways are set well apart. Many of the greens are protected with bunkers so bring your sand wedge. Visitors are welcome and green fees are only $80 (The course is better than that). The drainage is excellent so a good option any time of year and the greens here are some of Auckland’s finest. About 40 minutes drive south of Auckland CBD.

Clarks Beach Golf Club
Clarks Beach Golf club is one of Auckland prettiest golf courses. It’s relatively new, built in 1983. It’s a friendly country course and visitors are welcome. Green Fees are $55 and it’s about 40 minutes from the CBD. The course itself is parkland, with smalish greens, but very well looked after,

Maramarua Golf Club
50 minutes south of Auckland CBD is the country club of Maramarua. Visitors are welcome. Green fees are only $25 and $10 on Wednesdays. This is another excellent parkland style course. The 17th is a favorite hole, a downhill par 4 where strong players can drive the green.

Maxwells Golf Retreat
Owned and run by former NZ Women’s golf champion Kaye Maxwell this course is 9 holes (8 par 3s and 1 par 4) It’s a great place to learn to play or take a sneaky weekend break and book a few lesson with Kaye. There Bed and breakfast accommodation on site. Eat Play Stay.

Helensville Golf Club
Helensville Golf Club is a long drive from Auckland CBD. Green fees are $55 for non affiliated players, which seems a bit steep given the location and quality of other courses available. However the course itself is well maintained and very friendly.

Omaha Beach Golf Club
Omaha Beach Golf Club is built on the estuary side of the sandspit. It’s a lovely scenic course and always dry as it’s sand based. The green fees are $70. This is an extremely wealthy area, mainly holiday homes for Aucklanders. The course is way better than most, but not a bucket list course by any stretch of the imagination.

Wattle Downs Golf Club
This 9 hole golf course in Takanini was designed by Bob Charles. Built in 1979 it is a cheap place to learn to play golf and challenging enough that players of all levels will enjoy the course. It’s pretty flat by Auckland standards so an easy walk. Green fees are $10 on Mondays (except public holidays).

Waiuku Golf and Squash Club
About an hours drive south west of Auckland CBD is Waiuku Golf and Squash club. Green fees are a very reasonable $35 on weekdays and $40 on Weekends.

Wainui Golf Club
Drive half an hour north of Auckland and find one of Auckland’s newest golf club Wainui. Formed after the sale of the old Peninsula Club to housing developers. Designed by Grant Puddicombe. This is a championship course and significantly harder than Peninsula was. Excellent practice facilities. Green fees are a very reasonable $$59 for NS residents and $105 for International visitors.

Tara Iti
About an hour’s drive north of Auckland on the east coast is Tara Iti. It’s quite nice. Like the 6th best golf course in the world kind of nice. This place is absolutely amazing. built on sand dunes at Te Ari Beach every hole has magnificent scenery, The greens are huge and immaculate, the fairways here are better maintained than many clubs greens. The clubhouse is an architectural masterpiece. Designed by Tom Doak. It’s a private course and very difficult to get on. They don’t need your green fees it’s owned by a billionaire and many members live in the US and fly here to play. If you want to get a round you need to be invited by a member and then you need to pay. A lot. If you care how much then this course is not for you. This is the best course in New Zealand, and will likely be recognised as the best in the world at some point.
