JW Marriott Auckland Review

Overview

Formerly known as the Stamford Plaza (up until 16 December 2022), JW Marriott is a large 5 star hotel with 286 rooms located in Auckland CBD. It was extensively renovated in 2015 and rooms are well serviced. As part of the rebrand to JW Marriott the hotel is being upgraded again in stages.

This is a genuine luxury hotel with some very grand suites on the upper floors offering top end accommodation for business executives, visiting dignitaries and well heeled families. Also offering excellent romance packages for couples.

Location

The location is a 8/10 for tourists. It’s a short walk to the Viaduct Harbour, Queen Street, the Sky Tower and most of Auckland’s big financial and legal firms. The location is not a destination, so if you are not staying at the hotel you’d never go there but it is close to most of the things you’ll want to see and do in Auckland CBD.

Restaurants & Bars

The restaurant JW Kitchen is open for breakfast from 7am-10am and then from noon till 9pm for lunch and dinner. The dress code is casual. The restaurant serves the freshest local ingredients in a relaxed but elegant setting. It’s a good restaurant.

The hotel also features JW Lounge and Bar located on the lobby level. This is a great place to meet friends or colleagues for a drink. The hotel offers an excellent selection of bourbon and rye.

Accommodation Standard

The standard of accommodation offered at JW Marriott is a 10/10. Having been renovated in 2015 the rooms are in good condition. The decor is timeless and traditional, some may call it dull but it won’t date badly like the more wacky designer interiors of some other Auckland Hotels. The rebrand to JW Marriott and it associated renovation will once again make this one of Auckland’s finest hotels.

Negatives

  • It’s not cheap.
  • With a number of other tall buildings nearby the views are not as good as you might hope for the price. You may even need to close the curtains for some activities (or not if that’s your thing.)
  • Renovations are planned to be ongoing throughout 2023 however guest impacts will be minimal.

Outstanding Features

  • Suites in top three floors are fabulous.
  • Great restaurant
  • Great views from the pool and fitness centre.
