Rydges Hotel Auckland Review
Overview
Rydges has 88 rooms, a restaurant, a bar a fitness centre and conference/banquet/wedding spaces including a rooftop terrace. The hotel doesn’t have a pool, a hot tub or a spa, but the things they do they do well.
The restaurant has some pretty interesting events (held in a separate space to the main restaurant) such as dining in the dark and everybody sings. It’s right in the middle of the 4 star range. OK for families or couples if your on a budget or not celebrating an occasion. It’s really at it’s best for business travellers.
Location
The location is a 8/10. It’s located on Federal Street, between Skycity and the Viaduct. It’s a short walk to either ,as well as lower Queen Street and Aucklands’ business, legal and financial districts. The views are not great unless you’re on the roof, and the location itself is not special – it’s just quite close to a lot of nice places.
Restaurants & Bars
The restaurant and bar are nice but nothing to write home about. If you have the time and the budget take a walk down Federal Street. There’s some amazing restaurants nearby. Or try dining in the dark at Rydges for something a little different, pitch black, no idea what you are eating, blind wait staff. It’s fun, but I still prefer Masu 5 minutes down the road.
Accommodation Standard
The standard of accommodation offered at Rydges is a 7/10. It’s clean and well run, I’d say they have everything you need for a solo business trip, a comfortable bed, a clean room and a small desk. A restaurant and a bar. It’s not a hotel you’ll go home boasting about, but nor will you be complaining about it. A perfectly adequate place to stay in central Auckland, closer to where you’ll want to be than most other hotels in it’s class.
