Spencer on Byron Hotel Review
Overview
Spencer on Byron is a hotel and apartment building located in Takapuna on Auckland’s North Shore. It’s the tallest building in Takapuna and the views are spectacular (if you pay for a room with a view). They have a 20m outdoor pool and a tennis court. It’s a short walk to Takapuna Beach so a great location for families, but also really popular with couples and business travellers.
Location
The location is a 9/10. If you are not in the CBD then Takapuna beach is a great place to be. It’s one of Auckland best swimming beaches, with great views of Rangitoto. Takapuna’s got an excellent shopping district and its own set of bars and restaurants with a vibrant nightlife. The hotel itself is a block from the beach but it’s a pleasant walk through a shopping district to get there. Rooms on high floors have fantastic views.
This will be a great hotel to stay in during the America’s Cup with both the the A and B race courses likely to be visible from rooms facing Takapuna Beach.
Restaurants & Bars
There’s a restaurant and bar in the hotel. The restaurant is a BBQ joint called SmokePitt and Buoy with a good standard of food. If BBQ’s not your thing don’t worry Takapuna has plenty of great dining options.
Accommodation Standard
The standard of accommodation offered at Spencer on Byron is a 7/10. It’s a tall building with incredible views, in a great location. Spencer Hotel has a good sized heated outdoor pool, hot tub, tennis court and spa pool. The restaurant is good too.
What lets the hotel down is the quality of the rooms. They do not feel luxurious, they feel tired. Large numbers of reviews suggest the rooms are clean and tidy, but they are getting old, and are in need of refurbishment. It’s not helped by the fact they were not luxurious even when new. This hotel has huge potential but needs a major renovation. It’s really best described as 3 star rooms, with 4 star facilities, and 5 star views.
This a great family hotel in Takapuna. KIds love the pool and tennis courts as well as the proximity to the beach.
Negatives
- Rooms are tired and they have not even tried to make them luxurious.
