Stamford Plaza Auckland Review
Overview
Stamford Plaza is a large 5 star hotel with 286 rooms located in Auckland CBD. It was extensively renovated in 2015 and rooms are well serviced. This is a genuine luxury hotel with some very grand suites on the upper floors offering top end accommodation for business executives, visiting dignitaries and well heeled families. Also offering excellent romance packages for couples.
Location
The location is a 8/10 for tourists. It’s a short walk to the Viaduct Harbour, Queen Street, the Sky Tower and most of Auckland’s big financial and legal firms. The location is not a destination, so if you are not staying at the hotel you’d never go there but it is close to most of the things you’ll want to see and do in Auckland CBD.
Restaurants & Bars
Stamfords restaurant is called Koa, which is maori for joy or happiness. If a good steak makes you happy then this is the place for you. Koa aims to be Auckland’s best Hotel Grill. Frankly I think it’s a close second to The Grill by Sean Connolly at SkyCity Grand. Bit if you love a good steak then you’ll be happy here.
If steak is not your thing then try kabuki Teppanyaki. Billed as Auckland’s finest teppanyaki restaurant. I’ve yet to try it but there reviews are generally excellent with guests mentioning both the quality of the food and how much fun it was.
Koa lobby bar features less formal dining, high tea in the afternoons and cocktails.
Accommodation Standard
The standard of accommodation offered at Stamford Plaza is a 10/10. Having been renovated in 2015 the rooms are in good condition. The decor is timeless and traditional, some may call it dull but it won’t date badly like the more wacky designer interiors of some other Auckland Hotels.
Negatives
- It’s not cheap.
- With a number of other tall buildings nearby the views are not as good as you might hope for the price. You may even need to close the curtains for some activities (or not if that’s your thing.)
Outstanding Features
- Suites in top three floors are fabulous.
- Great restaurants
- Great views from the pool and fitness centre.
