Auckland’s North Shore is a great place to base yourself if you don’t want to be in the CBD.

North Shore was once a city in its own right, before being merged into Auckland. It’s a pretty big area and quite diverse. For tourists Takapuna or Devonport are the places to be. Albany is more for business travellers or those who need to stay there for an event. Further North in Orewa and you are really a long way from Auckland CBD it’s a beautiful beach but more of a vction from Auckland than a vacation in Auckland.

Hotels in Takapuna

Takapuna has a great swimming beach with relatively few sharks, and stunning views of Rangitoto. It’s also got a great shopping district and plenty of drinking and dining options. Public transport to the CBD isn’t great. There’s regular buses, or you can take a bus to Devonport and a ferry to the CBD.

spencer on byron business hotel exterior from Takapuna beach

The Spencer Hotel is the tallest building in Takapuna so the views from the upper floors are sensational. It’s a block from the beach but it’s pleasant walk though shops and restaurants. This is a pretty good allround option for business, pleasure or families. They have a tennis court and rooftop pool. A restaurant plus there’s plenty of dining options nearby. The hotel is a little dated and much of the building is apartments, but it’s well priced and in a good location.

Emerald Inn on Takapuna Beach

Emerald Inn Takapuna Beach

Located at the end of Takapuna Beach this is truly unique in Auckland. It feels like a tropical holiday but it’s right in Takapuna. Great for couples and families. Excellent beach access and plenty of shopping and and dining options nearby.  Kids will love the beach and the pool. Adults will love the shopping and bars.

Hotels in Devonport

Just a short and very scenic ferry ride from Auckland’s CBD is the affluent seaside suburb of Devonport. This is a great way to stay in the city without actually being in the CBD.

The Esplanade Hotel

The Esplanade boutique hotel in Devonport

This unique hotel is located on the waterfront in Devonport, a short ferry ride from Auckland CBD. The charming rooms in this heritage building are beautifully decorated in an antique style. The location is amazing, the rooms and the bar are great. Many reviewers don’t believe the restaurant lives up to the rest of the hotel. However there are many great restaurants to choose from in Devonport, or a short ferry ride away in the CBD. So don’t let that put you off staying in this charming boutique hotel in Devonport.

Peace and Plenty Inn

Peace and Plenty inn Devonport, North Auckland

Peace and Plenty Inn is a lovingly restored Victorian Villa. It’s really a Bed and Breakfast but it is perfectly located on the park in the centre of Devonport a 1 minute walk from the ferry, beach and shops. The rooms are beautiful (if you like old restored villas).

It’s dog friendly, and your host has a dog so if that’s not your thing maybe give this one a miss. It has real charm and the location is perfect. Devonport has plenty to do.
